GAY OFFICERS ACTION LEAGUE REACTION TO THE APPARENT USE OF AN ANTI-GAY SLUR BY A UNIFORMED OFFICER
New York, NY – November 1, 2023. The Gay Officers Action League (GOAL) is troubled and appalled about a recent incident apparently involving a New York City police officer using hate speech over a vehicle's public announcement system. We condemn such behavior because it is reprehensible and a severe violation of the trust and expectations we have for our fellow law enforcement professionals.
This incident reminds us of the ongoing prejudices that persist within our society, and the ease with which some resort to hate speech. We refuse to remain silent. We are committed to ensuring that all LGBTQIA+ individuals, both within or outside the law enforcement community, are treated with respect and dignity.
The Department's investigation is already underway and GOAL will continue to monitor this situation closely. We expect the results of that investigation to lead to appropriate disciplinary action in line with the NYPD's professional standards.
GOAL remains committed to promoting inclusivity and acceptance within law enforcement. We stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ officers, individuals, and those who support our cause. We call on all law enforcement agencies to prioritize diversity, training and awareness. We firmly state that anti- LGBTQIA+ slurs will not be tolerated within the NYPD and urge our law enforcement colleagues to unite against hatred and discrimination.
We encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences discrimination within the NYPD to come forward and report it. Together we can create a more inclusive and accepting environment for all.
