PRESIDENT'S BIOGRAPHY

Brian Downey

Brian Downey the President of GOAL New York began his criminal justice career as a communications clerk in 2005 with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey. Working alongside a group of talented detectives and federal agents, Brian became inspired to pursue a career as a sworn law enforcement officer.

Brian earned his bachelor's degree in Law and Society from the Ramapo College of New Jersey and is a Life Member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.

In January 2008, Brian was appointed to the New York City Police Department and has served in the Transit Bureau Brooklyn Impact, Transit District 30, the Special Victims Division, Hate Crime Task Force, Police Commissioner's Liaison Unit, and is currently assigned to the Criminal Intelligence Section. Brian has also had the honor of being elected as a PBA Union Delegate while he was assigned at Transit District 30.

With his constant showing of tenacity, hard work, focused persistence and dedication, Brian was recognized and promoted to Detective Investigator by Police Commissioner William J. Bratton in December 2015 and in December 2021 was promoted to Detective 2nd Grade by Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.

Brian became the GOAL New York President in January 2016, but his steadfast commitment to the organization began as he entered the Police Academy. Since that time, Brian has also served the group as its corresponding secretary, treasurer and vice president.

Brian's key agenda items for his presidency are to re-establish ties with LGBTQ advocacy groups in the greater NYC area, devoting time and resources to assisting LGBTQ homeless youth and to conduct a comprehensive review of the organization's by-laws.

Brian welcomes the challenges that come with being the president of the Gay Officers Action League and looks forward to serving the membership with the utmost pride and honor.
